Residues 5-100 of apo MBP (blue) were aligned with the same residues of maltose-bound MBP (green). Maltose ligand is shown in spacefilling CPK. Upon binding, the C-terminal domain closes around the ligand. This motion is characteristic of the periplasmic-binding protein family (Looger 2003).
